We drove along the shores of Cook Inlet down to Homer, the southern point of Kenai Peninsula. The view is toward Iliamna Volcano, to which we will fly with a bush pilot.

Bushpilot and guide Martin taking us into the backcountry with his 1975 Cessna. Only four people fit into it. My son declined on this one. We will look for bears and then fly over the volcano.

We landed at the shore. In this backcountry terrain there are no runways, roads, cars, homes. But there are grizzlies. Martin explains what to do and not to do in the vicinity of these big bears.

A mother grizzly with two cubs was spotted near a stream. We had to be quiet, stay together, walk slowly and keep distance from them. The tired cubs are only 6 months old.
