Reading these newsletters ("Mugelnoos" = news of the moguls) shows some of the history of the Ski Mountaineers Section (SMS) and the Rock Climbing Section (RCS). Older members will remember the events vividly, younger readers will be amazed about the activity and enthusiasm in the past. The sections experienced the same cycle as individuals, i.e. growth, peak and decline. Readers may enjoy the events, the humor, the cartoons, different opinions, sad and happy stories. The present collection covers the last 35 years, about the half the lifetime of the Mugelnoos founded in 1934.
A sample is an excerpt of a real old Mugelnoos from 1938. It reflects a the enthusiasm and activity. A stay at Edelweiss Hut was 25 cent/night! It's gone and so are the early skiers.
The Mugelnoos originals were donated by SMS & RCS member Rich Henke, who needed some space and was looking for some collectors. I happily accepted them as a valuable piece of history which should be preserved and made accessible to everyone. Thus I promised to scan them and post them on the website as a service to all readers. But easier said than done since scanning hundreds of pages is time consuming or, alternatively, quite expensive. But it is now done, almost.
Another batch of Mugelnoos issues were offered by Don Pies (issues from 1974-84). Further input came also by historian Mark Goebel (Mugelnoos 16-44). This time we were smarter and had 500 pages scanned by Office Max, which saves time by money, but Don, Mark and I shared the expense. If one wants to read the whole collection of old Mugelnooses they are in the Bancroft Library at UC Berkeley (http://www.lib.berkeley.edu/libraries/bancroft-library), but not easily accessed.
Anyhow, enjoy and take your time to look at them. You may notice that the Mugelnoos does not exist anymore. But don't cry Argentina, the methods of communication have changed with technology from prints to websites to facebook, tweets, etc. (thoughts of your old webmaster).
